President for relevant legislation to resolve women's problems

Rawalpindi: President General Musharraf on Monday stressed the need for appropriate legislation to resolve the problems of masses, particularly the women, who constitute half of the country's population.

The president made these remarks at a consultative meeting held here, which was also attended by Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz.

The meeting was aimed at bringing laws of the country in conformity with the teachings of the Holy Quran and Sunnah and providing quick and inexpensive justice to people at their doorsteps.

The meeting also reviewed laws related to women that were not in accordance with the Holy Quran and Sunnah, and directed the concerned authorities to come up with suggestions for amendments in different laws in order to provide greater relief to the people.

The prime minister said that Law Ministry was working in consultation with jurists and religious experts for amendments in various laws, adding, once drafts were ready, these would be laid before the Parliament for debate and passage.

Among others, the meeting was also attended by President Pakistan Muslim League, chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Senior Advisor to Prime Minister Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Muhammad Ali Durrani and Minister for Law and Justice M Wasi Zafar, Minister for Women Development Sumaira Malik, Secretary General PML, Mushahid Hussain Sayed and Attorney General of Pakistan Makhdoom Ali Khan.
