Disarmament to combat poverty : an international campaign

FIRST STEPS OF ACTION

In India, Pakistan and France, during the year 2007 the campaign proposes to launch the action at both local and national levels and to focus on youth mobilisation and public debates.

Peace camps on struggle for peoples rights

The youth camps aim at developing the capacities of young local leadership to take up non-violent social actions in their own environment and to carry further the dynamics of the campaign.

Training will include social surveys, participatory and public reporting about:,

- violations of basic rights;
- implementation of public policies and schemes meant to reduce poverty;
- social and environmental responsibilities of the citizens, the state and corporate sector;
- people’s resistance and constructive initiatives to assert basic human rights
- violence by state and non – state actors; in the backdrop of Militarism, Nationalism, Communalism and Sectarianism
- discussing disarmament – connecting the international, national and local

Districts will be selected with priority to poverty, violence prone areas and where peoples movements have emerged;

Utmost importance will be given to ensure participation of women and and all minorities.

The possibility of incorporating vocational training within the camps will be considered;

The camps will try and foster cross border exchanges between India and Pakistan , and between Asia and Europe.

Reports and public hearings on disarmament

The campaign proposes to set up national chapters in each country, who will contribute to the dynamics of the action by publishing annual reports on social issues related to disarmament and organising public hearings and debates around these reports.
