Methods of Intervention
In Asia, the bulk of the work done by Frères des Hommes and our
partners is centered on the issue of “Citizenship and Democratization
for Equitable and Cooperative Societies.”
This focus translates into support for empowering social actors in rural
and urban settings, establishing contacts between these actors, and strengthening
coalitions and networks between these social movements at the local, national,
and international levels.
Strengthening organizations’ abilities to affect
land management, development, and government of their region:
- The objective of the partners of Frères des Hommes is to mobilize
local populations to defend their rights, to participate fully in decisions
concerning the management of institutional, financial, and natural resources,
to gain land access, to improve production, and to establish local development
programs.
The promotion of a fair trade economy:
- Defend rights and promote the organization of at-risk workers by supporting
unions and rural and urban workers’ associations, taking opinion
polls on rights, and lobbying to challenge legislation.
- Support putting in place cooperatives, and systems of savings and
credit.
Promoting peace and fighting against discrimination:
- The principal objective of this focus, which is becoming more important
given the current situation in South Asia, consists of fighting against
discrimination on the basis of ethnicity, religion, gender, or caste
(in India); fighting against the manipulation of differences and prejudices
for political purposes; and promoting a sustainable peace at the local,
national, and international levels.
- Frères des Hommes supports initiatives on education against
prejudice, community organization to prevent conflict, and inter-community
and international dialogues and exchanges.
All these initiatives are systematically adapted to economic and political
realities in the countries where we work in South Asia.
