“In Cuba, FDH supports citizens working for environmental, economic, and social improvements at Havana’s Metropolitan Park, a place where people live and work.”

In Cuba, FDH works with its partner, CIERIC, in Metropolitan Park, in Havana’s green heart.
Our project’s principal objective is to help improve the park’s environment through reforestation, housing renovation, and economic and socio-cultural activities.

To respond to the important problems linked to domestic and industrial pollution in Havana’s Metropolitan Park and in the Almendares River, FDH and CIERIC decided to install a bamboo garden to contribute to both the reforestation of the riverbanks and the creation of wood-working jobs that produce construction material, crafts, and furniture.

In order to improve the sanitation of housing, FDH and CIERIC work with other local partners in the rehabilitation and construction of housing, in the El Husillo neighborhood. The construction material is given to the families, but the homes will be rebuilt by the residents themselves, in the spirit of self-help. These families will then obtain a deed of ownership for their homes. © FDH, CIERIC

In conjunction with concrete actions like planting a bamboo garden and building homes, various actions are sponsored to raise awareness and to build self-confidence among residents of all ages. Dance, music, song-writing, poetry, painting, and neighborhood festivals are additional tools in this work of awareness-raising and confidence-building. © FDH
