Directions of involvement
In Latin America, Frères des Hommes leads long-term actions to
fight deeply ingrained socio-economic and political inequalities—the
structural causes of poverty and economic instability. We also work toward
establishing links between Latin America and Europe, partnering together
on different causes and initiatives.
Rural development:
- Rural development is seen as a socio-economic and political process
by which producers have access to sufficient tools, engage in sustainable
development of their natural resources, have market access, and earn
enough to feed their families.
Rural development, which also includes a socio-territorial element,
must also ensure the alimentary needs (quality, availability, and access
to food).
The bulk of our actions in this area are devoted to strengthening organizations
and farmer movements.
With these partners, Frères des Hommes promotes the socially
sustainable development of their economy, which includes land access,
improvement of production and distribution, access to services (e.g.
credit), and strengthening the organization and their ability to negotiate.
Local Development and a Fairer Urban Economy
- Support the process of decentralization, promote the emergence of
new economic dynamics at the local level, and build participative management
at the local level.
- Favor putting in place new politics of development, focused on actors
in the fair trade economy.
- Work to overcome unstable job options, and work to decrease underemployment,
unemployment, and social exclusion.
- Promote the fair trade economy as a potential force for employment
and profit, build social structures, and rebuild relations between civil
society and the state.
Building Civil Society and the State
- Strengthen the bargaining power of social organizations.
- Encourage organizations’ participation in municipal management
to create democratic systems for regions and cities.
- Contribute to an environment of cooperation between public social
actors and private actors.
- Support initiatives to defend human rights and citizen rights, and
to prevent social conflicts.
