| Winter in Europe.
The season when the homeless are in the news. Associations in charge
of these excluded populations put all their energy into compensating
for the deficiencies of an economic system which excludes more and
more people. However, a study carried out last winter by the Emmaüs
association in conjunction with the BVA institute shows that despite
the difficulties encountered - somewhere to live, something to eat,
access to health care -, the homeless remain fundamentally optimistic.
77% of those questioned believe that their situation will improve.
This is a system that does not take them into consideration; nevertheless
they are part of it, since a third of them have a job and a quarter
have a fixed employment contract!
This does not even take into account how they are perceived by
others, or rather not perceived… Some people really deny that
they exist or even make the excluded or poor feel guilty. However,
the homeless have bucked this trend. In September 2006, in South
Africa, over 500 homeless persons took part in the 4th edition of
the Homeless Football World Cup.
In this issue of Résonances, we wanted to pay homage to
the dynamism showed by homeless people across the world. Yes, the
most vulnerable populations are able to act for their own survival,
but through their commitment, they can also contribute to a world
with more solidarity. Breaking through exclusion, weaving links,
comparing experiences in the North and in the South are clearly
avenues to be explored. Let’s hope that this breath of hope
will stir our leaders’ vision of the future!

Training will start in a few days. The Senegalese artisans

| South Africa: blocking the way to privatisations
On 3rd October last, hundreds of residents from Orange Farm, a township
about sixty km south of Johannesburg, blocked the major access road
to the capital in order to make their point. Armed with slogans
such as “No peace without development” or “No
liberty without access to basic services”, they barred the
highway for several hours to force the government to keep its promises. |

| In
Congo (DRC), the constitutional state goes through all information
means
Democratic Republic of Congo, June, 2006. In broad daylight, gunshots
rang out and the body of a civilian on his way back from the office
was found breathless twenty meters away from his house. He was the
father of eight children. Despite the banality of this gratuitous
crime, the organisation Heirs of Justice decided to act
immediately. Through its newsletter Nota Bene that it publishes
in the event of serious events, it immediately denounced this act.

“In order to help to change the world and curb poverty, to
help homeless people, the only thing we have to do is to take a

international network of street press , created in 2003 the first
Homeless Soccer World Cup. The fourth edition was held in Cap Town
in South Africa, from 23rd to 30th September, 2006.
